Sir Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly paintings reimagined in Virtual Reality (VR)
An ongoing Google Tiltbrush VR homage to the artwork of Australia’s Sir Sidney Nolan and our cultural anti-hero Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly. This somewhat spontaneous project began in 2019, and will continue to evolve as time permits.
The title for my work comes from Kelly’s infamous Jerilderie Letter – https://www.nma.gov.au/explore/featur… a wild rambling tome, through which Ned tried to explain his actions and motivations.
“‘I am a Widow’s Son, outlawed and my orders must be obeyed…”
As soon as I started playing in VR I knew that I wanted to re-imagine some of Nolan’s works. I started with ‘Ned Kelly’ (1946) as that is the one that we teachers often use to excite the pallete of young artists in primary school. As it stands, I’ve created 5 full pieces, which only leaves me around another 200 or so in the sequence left to go!
